Do you have any ideas for using lace in my project?
Lace is a beautiful way of adding a decorative flair to such a wide range of different crafts, including bedding, home decor, clothing, and toys. This is a simple add-on to any dressmaking or crafty project, and it is a great way to add interest and depth to your final creation.
How should I attach lace trims?
That depends on your project really and the lace trim that you have in mind. Overall, there are two main ways that you can attach these lace trims. The first is the easiest, just sew the lace trim onto your project after you have completed the hem, or on the hem of a garment that you are upcycling. Just keep it on top with a straight stitch along the band of your selected trim.
Alternatively, for a more professional finish that will hide any edges, you can also project the trim down from the hem as you are creating your garment. Crease your fabric around a ½ - inch from the edge, widening this for a thicker trim. You should pin the lace trim from the centre of the garment back, and ensure that you have kept the right side down. Use a small length zig-zag stitch to affix your project. The trims lower edge should be aligned with the fabric's outer edge, and then you can stitch the inner edge also. Make sure your fabric does not get caught in the machine.
How should I care for and maintain lace?
Before adding your lacy trim, it is recommended that you wash both your fabric and your lace beforehand as such materials can shrink when they have been washed. We always recommend hand washing lace products, just massage purpose-made soap onto the fabric and allow to soak for around half an hour. Rinse well but ensure that you do not wring the fabric out as this can damage the structural integrity of the lace. If the lace trim you have purchased is stiff, you can always soak it to remove any starch and allow for a more flexible fit.
Is there anything else I need to remember?
Some of these products are sold by the metre so that you can order exactly how much you need for your desired project. We endeavour to always cut our orders in one piece, however, due to the size of the rolls provided by manufacturers, this cannot always be guaranteed. As a result, if you do make an order that is over 5m, it is not likely to be in one continuous piece. We would also like to remind you that, if you are purchasing some of our products online, please remember that the reproduction of colours may differ due to monitor calibration. We try to match our colours and patterns as close to the image shown on your screen as possible, but we cannot always guarantee a 100% match.
