| Description |
English: The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after he defeated the Russian and Austrian armies at Austerlitz on 2 December 1805. The victory at the Battle of Austerlitz—also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors—is widely regarded as Napoleon’s greatest and brought a rapid end to the War of the Third Coalition, the first of five conflicts now known as the Napoleonic Wars.
Construction of the arch proceeded slowly with a total halt during the Bourbon Restoration (from the fall of Napoleon in 1814 until the July Revolution of 1830) with completion finally between 1833 and 1836 during the reign of Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1773-1850; reigned 1830-1848). In 1920 an unidentified soldier from World War I was interred beneath arch along with the lighting of an eternal flame to create the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
